Overview of Training Course
The objective of the Certified Professional Collector Trainer® (CPCT) program is to provide instruction and resource material to enable the trainer to develop and teach a collector training program that will deliver information to fellow company-employed collection personnel, helping them become proficient in providing collection services according to industry regulations and standards, that ensure the privacy, integrity, and security of the donor and the specimen.
About Your Instructor
Sherri Vogler started Houston Medical Testing Services, Inc. (HMTS) in 1989 and continues today as President and CEO of this full-service Third Party Administrator (TPA) providing drug and alcohol testing services for workplace programs throughout the country. Her 25 years of experience in this industry have given Sherri insight into the many varied aspects of drug and alcohol testing and continue to allow her to contribute in a meaningful way to the discussion of important issues facing this industry. She has been a DATIA trainer since 1997. Sherri currently teaches the Certified Professional Collector Trainer (CPCT) course for DATIA members and other trainers in this industry. She has also taught the Ins and Outs of Drug Testing and the Alternative Specimen Testing courses for DATIA. She helped to develop the DATIA online course for Certified Professional Collectors (CPC) and has trained collectors and audited collection sites for both federally regulated and non-regulated employers. As a speaker at the DATIA annual conference from 2007-2014, she has addressed issues of interest to collectors and collection sites. In 2010, Sherri was elected to the Board of Directors of DATIA and served as Chairman of the Education Committee. In 2012, she was elected to the DATIA Board of Directors Executive Committee as Secretary and in 2014 was elected to the Board of Directors Executive Committee as Chairman-Elect for a two-year term and will become Chairman of the DATIA Board of Directors in 2016. She continues to serve as Chairman of the Education Committee as well.
Certification and Accreditation
The Collector Certification Program and Accredited Collection Facility Program, administered by DATIA, involve upholding the highest professional standards in the collection facility and its operation, and the collection facility's personnel. To obtain accredited status, collection facilities are required to adhere to strict standards in areas such as regulatory compliance, company service standards, specimen handling, operational practices, business ethics, and facility equipment. All accredited collection facilities are also required to maintain a staff of Certified Professional Collector Trainer® (CPCT). For more information and a list of all accreditation and requirements.
Course Required Experience Level
DATIA's CPCT Training Course is designed for experienced collectors and/or collection site supervisors. The course is not meant for individuals who have little or no experience in specimen collection procedures. Before taking DATIA's CPCT Training course, participants must first meet the following:
1. 100 completed collections or six months active participation in collection services.
2. Currently employed in a position with active participation in specimen collection services.
3. DOT Required Mock Collections must be done prior to or after the course.
Please Note: DATIA training fees do NOT include the Initial Proficiency Demonstrations, also known as the “5 mock collections,” a DOT requirement for collector training, and, therefore a DATIA requirement for CPC/CPCT certification. You will need to do these on your own before getting access to DATIA’s certification exam. Please use our Regional Certified Professional Collector Trainer (R-CPCT) directory here to search for an R-CPCT near you to monitor your mock collections. If you cannot locate one near you, please keep in mind that many are willing to travel or monitor mock collections via webcam. You may also complete the mock collections with ANY collector who has been doing DOT collections for at least a year, OR who has taken a Train-the-Trainer course in DOT collections. (See 49 CFR Part 40.33 – What Training Requirements Must a Collector Meet?)
Collection Training Overview
Upon successful completion of the course, mock collections (to be done prior to the course), and exam, attendees are awarded the Certified Professional Collector Trainer® (CPCT) designation. This designation is renewable each June, and remains with the instructor regardless of their place of employment. Once certified, the CPCT may train other collection personnel within his/her company in preparation for the Certified Professional Collector® (CPC) exam. Upon successful completion of the exam, the collectors will be awarded the Certified Professional Collector (CPC)® designation. The fee for this designation is $95 annually, with group discount rates available for multiple collectors.
Continuing Education Units
Upon successful completion of the course, attendees receive .75 CEUs (7.5 contact hours) of continuing education credit. Attendees will be provided with a CEU certificate stating the course name, date, sponsoring organization (DATIA) and number of CEUs awarded. These CEUs can be used by attendees for fulfilling continuing education requirements.
Cancellations made at least 30 days before the program will receive a full refund; cancellations made at least 14 days before the program will receive a full refund less a $50 administrative fee; and cancellations made less than 14 days before the program are nonrefundable. All refund requests must be submitted in writing. DATIA reserves the right to cancel any and all courses 30 days prior to the date of the course(s) if five or less people are registered for any DATIA Seminar. DATIA will refund the course fee or offer a credit to attend the course at any date or location offered by DATIA within a year from the cancelled course date. DATIA will not incur any hotel or travel costs of attendees from a cancelled course. For any further questions regarding this policy please contact DATIA at 800-355-1257.
