DATIA's 4th Annual July Workshop is a Big Hit!

On June 15, 2004, DATIA held it’s 4th Annual July workshop titled Alternative Specimen and On-site Testing-Making it Work for You. The meeting was hosted at the beautiful Ronald Reagan International Trade Center in the heart of downtown Washington, DC.. The meeting was a grand success. DATIA reached a record attendance of over 170 attendees, and many of them expressed that this was the best workshop held so far.

Question: I'm an MRO and my collectors have been confused about what to do when a donor appears with a head turban on. I know the Regs says that all coats and headgear should be removed prior to testing, but, donors with religious turbans have declined to remove them. I've instructed our collectors to honor the donor's religious beliefs and place a notation on the "REMARKS" section of the CCF that the donor was wearing a turban and declined to remove it and proceed with the collection. Are any other organizations doing the same or should I change my policy?
Answer: The Department of Transportation's (DOT) Urine Specimen Collection Guidelines state that "when an employee is asked to remove his or her hat or head covering, and refuses to do so based on religious practice, the collector may exempt the employee from removal of the head covering, unless the collector has an observable indicator that the employee is attempting to hide inside the head covering adulterants or other substances which may be used in an attempt to adulterate or substitute a specimen."
